I had to share this. My dear friend Kristen has a little girl one week older than Benny. Her name is Irene and though they live in California, she and Benny have been through various experiences together including Africa school and having a new baby in the family. Irene has always had the most fantastic imagination and a really amazing command of language. Here is a poem that she wrote, transcribed by her mother. To me, this "polem" really speaks to what a wonderful mom Irene has in Kristen. The exploding confidence and the victoriousness of Irene really shine. It's great that such beautiful little girls exist in the world, made possible by the selfless and tireless efforts of people like Kristen, who is UNMATCHED in her amazing patience and sensitivity to her children.

"Irene's Polem"

the sun is coming up
the sky is looking blue
the coconuts are blooming
the STRAWBERRIES are blooming
and it's ALL TO ME

the fairies are waking up
the fairies are reading books
the fairies are happy
the fairies are playing
the fairies are playing so much
the kids are happy and playing too
the fairies are jenning kenning lenning
the wind is coming and the baby fairies are staying at home
but the fairies are never ever going to go away
never ever gever fever glever jever never

the moon is coming up
the sun is going away
and the clouds are going
the stars are coming out
the wishing star is the very first and brightest star at night
so EVERYTHING is ALL TO ME

never ever go away from the baseball, stay there at night when you want to
play
just stay and play
no matter what, it's ALL TO ME

Benny is eating the green beans that he grew in his container garden on the porch. We harvested them just now. Plot twist: he is eating them raw. Hey, who am I to say him nay? We washed them (well) and he was all interested in eating them and so he just took a bite and pronounced them "yummy." So there you go, Farmer Benny eating his first crop. Ah, he just brought me one to share. I've never had raw green bean -- tastes like a mixture of grass and snow peas. What do you know?
