Oh and the thing that we thought was a piece of roof was actually a piece of trim from up in the peak of the roof... so... the roof holds. But the neighbor's roof is waving up and down like an excited pageant winner in a local parade.

Almost half the people in the area are without power and they're telling us on the news that we can expect to be without power for a week. A WEEK!?!?! The snarky news lady was saying a big fat WE TOLD YOU SO to everyone, saying, "You were warned that you could lose power for a week and if you haven't evacuated at this point you CAN'T because all the bridges and tunnels are closed so I guess next time you will heed our alarmist sensationalist reporting and BUY BATTERIES A MONTH IN ADVANCE." Or whatever. I don't remember being warned that power would go out for a week.

A big piece of tree fell onto a wire right by our house and Dan went out and climbed on the truck and got it off the wire and dragged it into the front yard. We DO NOT want to lose power! OR CABLE OR DSL!!!! :) What would we do without the weather channel and all the satellite images on the web being updated moment by moment?

Outside it looks like it's raining leaves and twigs. Cars are plastered with leaves, everything plastered, and the winds are still very strong. They keep telling us on the news that "we haven't seen the worst of this yet!" and the news people are getting VERY SNARKY with thrill seekers who are for example SWIMMING IN THE SURF in and also riding bikes on the beach... driving around town with their windows down screaming and hooting. All the news people feel compelled to 'reiterate that this is a very serious situation' -- how serious can it be when people are swimming in it? AHHH.

The fence in the back yard just fell down. Supposedly we're not going to see the worst of this for another hour or two. Seems pretty bad right now! Benny is all excited and throwing a giant purple ball around the house causing havoc.

A piece of our slate roof just fell on Dan's car. Illustrating the point that it's all fun and games until Dan's car gets scratched by a piece of slate roof. Do I need to mention that the winds are REALLY picking up? They're really picking up.

WHOO! DSL went out for a while. There are some big branches down in our backyard and the winds are CRAZY!!! I keep looking at the phone/electrical lines and thinking... there's no way these are going to stay up. Some people in Norfolk have lost power. There is talk among the population that some of us brave souls might hole up in the church, which has rooms with no windows, basement, etc. but I think Dan is stapled to the floor here in some sort of male go-down-with-the-ship mentality, and I have to say the prospect of lugging water jugs, stuff for Benny, bedding, food, etc. etc. over to church and possibly being there all night isn't PARTICULARLY savory, much as I would enjoy seeing Bonnie's new baby. Plus driving over there would scare the pants off me at this point... Dan said he would drive us but I don't want to be separated from him, just in case he ends up in Oz and I'm stuck here in Kansas. So, Benny and I have chairs pulled up to the windows in the front room and we're watching the neighbors' shingles lifting up and down, and watching the trees bend. I'm crocheting and Benny is sticking his hook in and out of the skein meditatively and eating a pear.

Contrary to my earlier report, Dan's Wall Street Journal actually stayed dry inside its little bag. SO hey. But no mail. About an hour to go before it's supposed to get really bad -- we'll see! WHEE!!! :)

If you want to see what the hurricane looks like at our house, go here:

Right now you can see the river with the ships that are left.

We're watching the weather channel and in awe of the guy at Kill Devil Hills, NC, who is STILL STANDING ON THE BEACH! Those guys are seriously hardcore.

First casualty of Isabel at our house:

Dan's Wall Street Journal.

*sniff*

The neighbors evacuated but kindly and thoughtfully left a GIANT BROKEN WATER HEATER out on the curb, which the garbage man kindly and helpfully DID NOT TAKE, so it is sitting out there biding its time like a bullet in a gun, ready to shoot through our bedroom window when the 100 mph winds arrive. Hehehe. Plenty of debris on the ground and cars and it's pretty windy but the rain really isn't too bad. So far the carpet is dry.
