Sunday, April 04, 2004 ( 7:02 AM ) Lostcheerio Sadie, precocious child that she is, is observing daylight savings time. She was up brisk and sassy at 5:30, which is the new 6:30. What did she want to do? Play sit-em-up. She played sit-em-up with Dad last night until she was crying weakly with fatigue but still wanted to play more sit-em-up. She always and forever wants to play endless sit-em-up world without end amen. Sadie is different from Benny, but the same. For example, the relentless, dogged, mulish practicing at all hours of the morning/night is very like Benny. However, Benny's method in learning to sit up was to sit straight up from a prone position, just to pry himself directly up by the sheer force of his will and his rock hard stomach muscles. This was not a good plan and lead to him doing a lot of half-situps. Sadie has realized that she has to somehow get on her side first, so if she has no one's thumbs to help her sit up, she gets onto her side, where she might be able to push herself up on her arm IF SHE HAD ANY STRENGTH IN IT, and then struggles and grunts around until someone rescues her with thumbs, or she gets too tired in which case she lies back on her back. It's very distressing to watch -- we just want her to lie around like a lump and do nothing. She cries and gritches around and fusses and mews until you have the sense to give her thumbs and let her pull herself up. Then she sits there looking around with fascination like WOW I CAN SEE FOR MILES UP HERE! THE AIR IS SO CLEAR AND CLEAN UP HERE SITTING UP! *wobble wobble* Then she bonks back down and starts trying again. When you think about it, if you just had to lie down all the time and couldn't sit up at all, it WOULD be very interesting and exciting to sit up, I guess. It's just... pretty funny to watch. # |
