Saturday, June 19, 2004 ( 10:07 PM ) Lostcheerio One more thing. Today after the boat trip we all came home and showered and Sadie was all clean and in her jammies and we were all eating supper so it was time for Sadie's banana but I did NOT HAVE A BANANA. So, I had this banana baby food (Gerber, right?) that I'd bought for just such an occasion and we cracked one open and it smelled LIKE DEATH. Dan tried to feed it to her and she WOULD NOT EAT IT. She said it tasted like terrible bananas of pain and woe. And she said a lot of other unprintable things. So, tomorrow I get fresh bananas for her, and no more of this baby food crap. I'll buy a food masher and make all her food fresh. Benny never had any of these discriminating feelings -- as a baby he never met a calorie he didn't like. :) :) Dear little precious Benny -- he was falling asleep and I was lying in his bed with him to comfort him since we thought he might like to watch Star Wars (space camp and all) but he said it was too scary and I felt like a troll for even letting him watch the first 20 minutes... of course as Dan rightly pointed out he would much prefer a documentary! This is so true! Why did I not see this??? Anyway I was lying there and he was quiet and I said, "What are you thinking about?" and he said, "I'm just thinking about you." # (0) comments ( 9:44 PM ) Lostcheerio Today we took the boat out. If you know the Chesapeake Bay around Lynnhaven inlet, we went out to the Black Can area and then out the Northeast inbound/outbound channel following a Navy ship and a sailboat who were way ahead of us. We went out until we couldn't see any more land. IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! We had so much fun, it was fantastic. Benny and Sadie, and I am not even kidding, slept in the cabin for like two hours. The sea was PERFECT just the right amount of rocking and rolling and not too bumpy -- they slept like little angels right next to each other and Dan and I actually had a conversation in the middle of the day which never happens, we never talk until we are too tired to think let alone actually have and communicate ideas. Dan saw one of these today!!!! ![]() A Cownose Ray was swimming right beside the boat. It was on his side, and although he circled back and looked, we couldn't find it again. Pretty cool though!!! He said it was huge and looked like a giant board. Apparently the rays are breeding right now. Another exciting moment was when we saw a buoy about the size of a large coffee can go zooming through the water!!! CRAZY!!! It must have been attached to a sporting fish of rather considerable size who had been harpooned with it (like in Jaws when they harpoon the barrels to the shark) and then had gotten away from the fisherman. The buoy was moving really fast -- it was sending out a little wake! It was very tempting to try and grab it and pull up whatever was on the end of it -- maybe a marlin or swordfish or whatever, but recently a guy in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, saw a THREE THOUSAND POUND GREAT WHITE SHARK and even though this couldn't possibly have been it, he said it was swimming north, and you can never be too careful! Last time we went out, I forgot to mention, we saw some boards floating in the water right around the Cape Henry lighthouse... we had to go back to get my hat which had fallen in the water (whee) and there were these old boards. Well, whatever, right? Turns out there is a sunken wreck right around there that they are planning to drag up and get rid of because it's starting to break up and get in the way of boat traffic! MEANING US. Whee indeed. Final interesting thing: There are these yellow buoys in the middle of that in/out channel we were riding around on today. They are audible buoys as well as lights. Which means there are these big metallic bongers and gongs on them... it was AMAZING hearing those bells. The slap, slap of the water and the clanging of those buoys -- was very beautiful. The first one out had 3 different tones, the second had one and the third had two. I wondered if they did that on purpose. I imagine in the dark with no wind and quiet seas that sound is extremely haunting. It was really cool! Today was my first time in a boat being out far enough where I couldn't see land. I didn't fall from the crow's nest into the sea, but I did have a bit of a Melville moment. I need to reread Moby Dick, again. IT IS SO RELEVANT, PEOPLE. WHY YOU CAN'T SEE THAT IS BEYOND ME. Yes I am going to read "The Masthead." Meditation and water are wedded forever. # (0) comments ( 7:20 AM ) Lostcheerio I just love and adore this sweet little baby. What kind of a baby actually likes to go to sleep and tries to go to sleep and perseveres in her commitment to go to sleep? It's CRAZY. Last night Sadie peeped in her room so I went and got her, and I thought she was cold, so I brought her in bed with us, just like old times when she was tiny. She laid there between us sleepily peeping and goo-ing and opening and closing her eyes. We started having a conversation, as we are prone to do, and she was getting irritated that we were keeping her awake! Every time Dan talked, she'd roll over and grab his nose! And frown! And then she'd roll over back into me and snuggle up and close her eyes again! I'm telling you in my limited experience with just one other child who would have walked through fire to avoid sleep, this is amazing. Just amazing. She's the absolute most amiable and adorable and compliant and willing and cheerful and delicious baby ever. Yesterday I went into the health food store to get stuff and the lady in there said, "Wow, you have such happy babies!" And I looked at Benny and Sadie, and Benny was singing cheerily as he perused the aisle and Sadie was grinning and squeaking from her carseat, and THEY ARE HAPPY. That pleases me. On the babbling front: Sadie has been saying "BAH BAH BAH DA DA DA DA BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!" all the time in the car. Very endearing. She is really holding forth on something. # (0) comments Thursday, June 17, 2004 ( 7:28 PM ) Lostcheerio Sadie's babbling!!! It sounds like "BAH BAH DAH DAH BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!!!" She's very irate and she's just giving Dan a huge piece of her mind. She's doing it RIGHT NOW it is HILARIOUS. It's so cute I am fainting from love. Dan just can't stop laughing at her and Sadie, brow furrowed, little rosebud lips all stern and dictatorial, is just BAH BAH BAH DAH DAH BLAH DAH DAH BAH!!!! all over the place. It's so sweet!!!! Hehehe. # (0) comments Wednesday, June 16, 2004 ( 11:24 AM ) Lostcheerio Since Benjamin has been going to space camp every morning, Sadie has been taking a morning nap in her actual bed, BLESS HER LITTLE HEART, and then getting up to play. She's also been watching Baby Einstein. When Benny's around she doesn't get to watch it much... which I suppose is fine, she's getting more interest and stimulation out of him than out of anything on DVD. :) :) But I do want her to watch it, for the foreign language phonemes etc. and because Benny watched these tapes every day, so, you know, you never know... SO for the last few days she's been watching Baby Einstein and she really enjoys it all the way through. Good job Sadie! Baby school! :) # (0) comments Tuesday, June 15, 2004 ( 6:22 PM ) Lostcheerio Sadie has always been very amused by the phrase "Gup-gup-gup" especially if while you're saying it you're pretending to eat a part of her. # (0) comments |
